From the Renaissance to the 17th century the relationships between Italy, France, England, Germany, and Spain are extraordinarily vital, and artistic innovations gradually revolutionize the music of these countries, each adapting them to its cultural identities and unique practices. This musical journey presented by L’Achéron allows us to appreciate the colorful repertoire for a consort of violas da gamba in Europe and demonstrates how each nation both imitates each other and invents itself during this key period in the history of modern art.

After the Thirty Years War, the devastated Germany developed a particularly expressive musical style in remembrance of the horrors endured. This style resulted from the fusion of the Lutheran polyphonic tradition and influences from the new Italian instrumental music. Thus, the strings weave around the solo voice a polyphonic accompaniment of great beauty.

Fables by Jean de la Fontaine (1621-1695) and works by Marin Marais (1656-1728)
Since their publication in 1668, La Fontaine’s Fables have been timeless mirrors of our passions. An intimate performance – a musician, an actor – yet rich, it stages a lion, an oak, two pigeons … accompanied, at times tumultuously, by music that alternately charms and unsettles us.
